Tips to Stay Warm in the Snow

Lean Into Layering

Layering is so much more than just throwing on a hoodie under your jacket. The key is to think in three parts, base, middle and outer layer. The base layer is the one that sits against your skin and should be made of moisture wicking materials.

This is not cotton! Cotton stays damp and will make you cold, but synthetic blends or merino wool won’t. Then you have your middle layer, which is your insulating layer. Fleece down or insulated jackets work great to trap body heat.

On top of this layer, you should have a shell that protects against wind, snow and rain. So, look for something waterproof and breathable to keep the elements out while you ski.

Keep your Extremities Warm

Your fingers, toes, ears and nose are usually the first to feel the cold. You need to make sure that you’re packing high quality waterproof gloves or mittens, A cozy neck scarf or balaclava, and a snug beanie or helmet liner under your ski helmet. And never forget your feet.

Even if you’ve got top notch boots, your socks really do matter. Thin cotton socks are not the way to go. You want the warmest thermal socks possible so that you’re not rushing to the chalet to defrost halfway through your day.

Take Breaks

Stopping for a hot drink or a bite to eat does so much more than just give your legs a break. It helps to keep your energy up and your body temperature steady. Warm drinks like tea or hot chocolate are a nice bonus but keep a snack in your pocket for lift rides and don’t skimp out on hydration even if you don’t feel super thirsty. Being on the slopes is thirsty work.

Remove Damp Clothing

If you happen to sweat a lot or you take a tumble in the snow, swap out your damp layers as soon as you can. Wet clothing saps your warmth quickly, so stash an extra base layer or pair of gloves in your backpack or locker. It can make the difference between a great day out and a miserable one.

A Little Prep Will Keep You Warm

Staying warm while enjoying a day on the slopes is all about preparation and the right gear. By layering effectively, ensuring your extremities are well-protected, taking breaks to recharge, and being mindful of damp clothing, you can fully embrace the exhilarating experience of skiing or snowboarding.

With these tips in mind, you’ll be ready to carve down the mountains comfortably and make the most of every moment in the fresh Alpine air. Happy skiing!
