We’re not saying (and never would say) that being a mom isn’t a rewarding thing to do in itself, because it absolutely one hundred percent is, but it also comes with a lot of challenges and, yes, problems, and they’re going to be hard to handle, no matter who you are or how much you know.
That’s why it’s so important to balance the demands of family, work, and personal time, but when you try to do that, it can often leave moms feeling overwhelmed and even stressed out, which is actually the opposite of what it’s meant to be doing. However, since it’s so important to get this balance right, the key might be in finding new passions and interests and incorporating them into your routine so they don’t get in the way of what you’re doing but they do help you find the balance you’re looking for.
That might sound like an impossible thing to do, but it’s really not – you just need to find the right hobbies, and that’s what this blog post is all about. If you think finding a new activity to do that will help you find more balance in life is something you’d enjoy, keep reading to find out how to go about it.
Rediscover Old Interests
It can be hard to know where to start when it comes to finding new passions and interests as a mom, especially if you’ve only got limited time, so why not start with old passions and interests instead? Many moms had hobbies when they were children or young adults – or at least before they had children – and it might be that those interests, which they’ve set aside due to time restraints or other commitments, are exactly the right route to go down.
Think back on things you used to do and that you enjoyed – the things that allowed you to stop thinking about general day-to-day worries and tasks that had to be done and just let you be yourself (possibly by yourself) for a while, and here you’ll start to have a list that might be just right for the here and now, not just the past. If you’re not sure where to start, why not take a look at old photo albums, journals you might have written, or even your social media pages from years ago – you might come across something that jogs your memory and helps you get back to what you were doing before.
Crafting And DIY
If you’re looking for a brand-new hobby to get involved in, crafting can be a great option – many people find it’s actually a hugely therapeutic thing to do and a great way to spend any free time you might have (perhaps when your children are sleeping or out with friends, for example). Youll need a few tools and some materials (depending on the specific type of crafting you’re doing), but it really doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby and many people find they can do crafting projects like painting, making clothes, pottery, and so on, for only a small amount of money, which is always a bonus.
Moving on slightly from crafting is DIY, which uses a lot of the same skills, so again might be a hobby you’re interested in. Not only is DIY fun and a great way to do some problem-solving (which can help you in other areas of your life, including at work), but it also means your home is always in the best shape and, if you’ve got kids, it can means it’s a safer, healthier place to live too, so DIY as a hobby is definitely worth considering.
Physical Activities
Taking care of your physical health when you’re a mom isn’t always easy – you’ll always be looking after others, and that can mean your health and wellbeing get put on the back burner where they can easily be forgotten (or ignored, which is just as problematic). While it’s great to look after others so well and it’s something all moms need to do for their kids, if you’re not also looking after yourself, at some point you’re going to get sick and burned out, and then you’re not going to be able to take care of anyone – that’s the last thing you’ll want to happen.
That’s why picking a hobby that’s got at least an element of physical activity included is a good idea – it’s a two birds with one stone situation because you’ll have a hobby for yourself and you’ll be getting and staying fit at the same time. And even better, you can choose from a plethora of different options, from running to football to swimming to yoga to dance and so on – it’s an almost endless list.
Lifelong Learning
Maybe you loved school and you miss the feeling of learning new things and gaining new knowledge. Maybe school was less fun for you, and you feel you missed out on the chance to learn because you didn’t like the environment you were meant to be learning in. Maybe you just want to find a hobby that’s useful. In any of these situations (and more than likely a good few we’ve not mentioned), getting back into some kind of education might be the right move to make when you’re looking for a hobby and interest to do as a mom.
If you think this sounds like an option, there are lots of routes to go down, all with different outcomes, commitments, and costs, so you’ll need to think carefully about what you want to do. You might just want to learn a lot more about a particular topic you already have an interest in, and to do that you can go to the library or go online and get plenty of information to give yourself more knowledge – just make sure you’re using reputable sources so you can be sure you’re learning the right things.
However, you might want to go further and get a formal qualification, which is especially useful if you want to change careers or start a business, for example. In that case, you’ll need to consider going back to school either physically or online – there’s a cost involved in that, and you’ll need to make sure you’ve got the time, but the results can be perfect to help you move into the future. Finally, you could learn things that will help you take care of your family, like how to cook healthy food, lifeguard training so everyone stays safe on the beach, or even how to drive if you don’t already (that can be really helpful when it comes to making life more convenient and ensuring your kids can get to their own hobbies and classes on time and regularly). Whatever you choose, learning new things helps keep the brain active and it can be fun too, so it’s definitely something to think about.
Combine Hobbies With Family Time
One last thing to mention is that many moms don’t feel they’ve got enough time to dedicate to their own hobbies and interests, and although that might be true when you think of doing things by yourself, what if you combined your hobbies with family time?
If you choose simple things that everyone in the family can do, like playing board games, going for nature walks, cycling, cooking together, and so on, you can have a great hobby and you won’t have to worry about finding the time to do it – you’re using time you would have been together anyway, but instead of watching TV (which is the usual thing to do), you can be doing something different. If that sounds like a great idea, start with one evening a week and see how it goes.
Make More Free Time To Explore
One of the biggest challenges moms face when trying to find new passions and interests is simply not having enough time in the day. Between juggling work, family, and household chores, carving out even an hour for yourself can feel impossible. That’s why it’s worth looking for practical ways to lighten your load so you can focus on what really matters. For example, hiring a professional cleaning service like Seattle Green Cleaning Fairy can be a game changer — they’ll take care of the heavy lifting when it comes to keeping your home fresh and tidy, giving you back precious hours each week. With less time spent scrubbing floors or dusting shelves, you’ll have more mental space and freedom to try that yoga class, pick up an old hobby, or even just relax with a book. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help — investing in services that ease your daily responsibilities is really an investment in your well-being and happiness.
