The Viral Beauty Hacks that are No Friend to Your Kid’s Teeth

You don’t need to be on social media to know that TikTok is overflowing with beauty hacks, quick fixes, and glow-up routines. Even though parents will try to instill healthy development (like hygiene) into their kids at a very young age, they can sometimes believe stuff online way too easily. And yeah, many of them are wildly creative, some of them just plain alarming. It’s one thing when a skincare trend goes slightly wrong. A little redness or a breakout can heal. But when a dental trend goes sideways, it often leaves permanent damage.

Sure, teenagers (and even younger kids) love anything with instant results, but these are pretty dangerous.

The DIY Braces Trend That Needs to Stop

One of the more shocking trends is teens using tiny rubber bands to close gaps in their teeth. It sounds simple: loop it around the teeth and wait for them to move. But orthodontics is about way more than shifting teeth around. It’s about bone structure, bite alignment, and ensuring the changes are safe and lasting. It’s just not smart to do it this way.

DIY Whitening Can Go Very Wrong

There are so many out there, like swishing hydrogen peroxide to mixing baking soda with lemon juice, but almost all of them are acidic mixtures, and yeah, they erode enamel quickly and can irritate the gums.

The initial result might look great, but it doesn’t last, and the damage builds up. Honestly, they’re better off (and way safer) going to see a dentist and getting their teeth professionally whitened. Plus, dentists have recommendations for what toothpaste can help with white teeth, too.

Tooth Gems

The stick-on sparkle trend is everywhere. But the problem is, they (mostly girls) are buying DIY kits online of rhinestones and actually gluing these themselves on their teeth because they see influencers do this. Obviously, these adhesives aren’t safe, and yeah, only a dentist should always be the one applying any kind of cosmetic tooth accessory, if it’s safe to do at all.

Filing Teeth with Nail Files is Not a “Hack”

Yep, this trend is as horrifying as it sounds. Well, adults are doing this too because they’re unhappy with uneven teeth, and they’re using nail files to smooth them out or make them look straighter. It’s usually framed as a way to avoid braces, with the assumption that it’s no different from shaping a fingernail.

But enamel isn’t something that grows back, permanent teeth don’t grow back. Once it’s gone, well, it’s gone forever.

Charcoal isn’t the Miracle Whitener

One trend that keeps resurfacing is brushing with activated charcoal. This has technically been around way before TikTok, too. Now, you have to keep in mind that charcoal is highly abrasive. It scrubs the surface of the teeth aggressively, wearing away enamel in the process.

You most likely know this, but that layer of enamel is what protects teeth from decay, sensitivity, and discolouration. So stripping it away doesn’t just dull the smile over time, but it makes it more vulnerable to damage.
