New Year’s Eve stopped being a big deal to me, years ago. In fact, I almost resent its existence because of the pressure to experience it to the fullest. So I basically ignore it now. But I do love celebrating anything and everything with the kids. Almost every year, we have toasted to a random foreign country’s new year which was earlier than ours. This originally started so that we didn’t have to let the kids stay up until midnight but then evolved into, so we didn’t have to stay up until midnight.
This year, I didn’t even realize for part of the day that it was the 31st and when I did, I also realized that I hadn’t bought the sparkling juice that I always get in lieu of champagne. I mentally shrugged and figured that the kids who aren’t really kids anymore wouldn’t care. I figured that they just humor me anyway.
Well, fast forward to 8:30ish. I’m lounging in bed with no plans to accomplish anything else “this year.” Then here comes Antwan. Antwan will be 18 in 3 weeks and he’s the hardest of the 4 to get out of his room.
This kids of mine says “Did you get any fake wine?”
What? You’re not supposed to ask that!
I told him that I forgot and he said it was ok. But it was then that I realized it might actually matter to him.
Where’s the wine??
Well, we may not have had fake wine but Brian did bring home a bottle of Chardonnay from work last week! I rushed down to find it and ask what time it was turning midnight somewhere.
He knew exactly where the wine was and he knew that it would be midnight in Buenos Aries at 9:00 our time. (Thanks, Brian!)
I fridged the wine and ran around the house, telling everyone that we would meet in the living room at 9 to celebrate the Buenos Aries new year’s. No one argued and everyone agreed.
Happy New Year!
Well, William and Kaleb beat us down there and then we realized that we couldn’t find the corkscrew. We broke the bottle trying to get it open but all of the wine remained inside. HA! We probably didn’t have our drinks ready until at least 9:15.
But we did our own countdown, we cheered and clinked our glasses.
We all hugged. Kaleb said, with a smile, “are you happy, Mom?”
I said that I was and everyone went back to their rooms.
Memories
But I know something now that I didn’t really know for sure before.
It matters to them.
I mean, they are also humoring me. But it matters to them.
So I will make sure to keep making these memories for them.
Because it matters.
(Lizzie and Antwan didn’t drink the wine. 😊)

Love this 🙂 And I really like this concept of celebrating another country’s new year. I’m doing that next year, lol.
