How To Make Simple Mother’s Day Tea Sandwiches

I don’t know how you will be spending your Mother’s day but I’m going to spend mine, making my family eat sandwiches with me! Not just sandwiches but sandwiches with herbs and edible flowers, like Impatiens!

Hopefully, this isn’t all that we will do together because this is a quick activity but, still, I am looking forward to our brief tea party!

But first, a history lesson!

Where Did Mother’s Day Come From?

Did you know that Mother’s Day originated in West Virginia? It wasn’t started as a holiday to spoil moms, although I fully support that, but rather as a way to bring awareness to unsanitary conditions and to bridge the gap between northern and southern states.

Ann Reeves Jarvis was a young Appalachian wife and mother who spent her adult life trying to improve issues around her, such as the high infant mortality rate and unsanitary living conditions. One of the ways that she did this was to organize “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs.” These clubs raised money to feed soldiers, buy medicine and hire women to work with families in need. The work clubs even developed programs to inspect milk. This was before there were even state requirements. Go, mothers!

Julia Ward Howe volunteered for the US Sanitary Commision during the Civil War. One of the goals was to improve the conditions for the sick and wounded solders. In 1870, she wrote the “Appeal To Womanhood Throughout The World,” later known as the “Mothers’ Day Proclamation.” It was asking women to unite for peace in the world. Julia was reacting to the effects of the Civil War and she believed that women had a responsibilty to get involved politically to help positively influence society.

From these women, Mother’s Day was born. So if you ever feel like you are still doing a lot of the work on Mothers’ Day, that was apparently the idea, anyway. 🤦‍♀️😂 But, again, kids, if you are reading this, I’m definitely ok with being spoiled!

And now that we have learned stuff, let’s get back to the food!

Ingredients for tea sandwiches

Let’s Have Sandwiches!

1. Get some fancy bread!

I have tried these sandwiches with Brioche and Rye bread. They are both fancy and yummy.

2. Get some spreadable cream cheese!

I don’t think I really need to elaborate on this one. Just go buy some cream cheese.

3. Get a decorative topper like cucumber or radishes!

Slice them thin.

4. Get some herbs!

Here are just a few herb suggestions and their benefits.

Basil – reduces stress, purifies the air and reduces bloating

Rosemary – Reduces muscle pain, improves memory and promotes hair growth

Mint – improves asthma, helps with depression, and reduces nausea and headaches

5. Get some edible flowers!

Besides Impatiens, some other options are dandelions, honeysuckles, hibiscus and lavender.

Time To Make It

Slice the bread in quarters, halves or whatever you fancy!

Spread the cream cheese

Pop on your topping, herbs and flower.

Eat it!
